The Charitable Trust

5th June 2010 update from David Hattersley MBE Secretary to The Trust

THE WORSHIPFUL COMPANY OF CONSTRUCTORS
CHARITABLE TRUST
(274573)

May I take you back to the words of the Master’s address at the time of your being admitted into the Company:

The ancient watchwords of the City are Fellowship, Relief and Truth. The purpose of all ancient City Livery Companies was to support the Church, dispense alms to the needy and supervise and regulate the practice of their skill………and you will be required to prove your zeal………by a regular attendance at our functions and services of worship, together with regular support to our Charities.

All City Livery Companies have a Charitable Trust through which to achieve these aims. The well being of the Constructors Charitable Trust owes much to the dedication and husbandry of Past Master Tony Appleton who served as both Trustee and Clerk to the Company from 1982 to 1995.

As a Charity, the Trust is mandated by the Charity Commissioners year by year to spend both the interest on its capital, and all received donations, unless expressly described by the donor as an addition to the Trust’s capital sum, to meet its charitable aims. These, in our case, relate to supporting a number of City Charities and funding the Company’s scholarships. The sum available for distribution has been £10 - £15,000 for some time but less than half of this can now be covered from investment income. Each June the Trustees make recommendations to the Company’s Charity Committee as to the recipients of the available funds.

The Constructors Charitable Trust is administered in accordance with the terms of a Deed dated 31 July 2002. At least three Ordinary Meetings are held each year and the Master of the day will be invited to be in attendance. At the first of these meetings the Trustees elect one of their number to be Chairman. Copies of the minutes of the meetings will be circulated to members of the Charity Committee and to the Clerk, from whom copies can be made available to members of the Company on request.

The current Trustees are:

Kenneth Kent, FCIOB MRICS FASI MCMI (Chairman)
Norman Brown, BSc FCA
Melville Dunbar, RIBA FRTPI FFB RIAI
Marion Rich, Barrister MSc FCIArb
Paul Shepherd, CBE DL D.Univ CEng BSc(Eng) FCIOB FICE FCIBSE CCMI ACGI
Doug Barrat FCIOB FRSA

And the Secretary to the Trust is:

David Hattersley MBE CEng BSc(Eng) FCGI FICE FCMI

A personal message from The Master 2012/13 - Stephen Rigden

The "Three Cs" are traditionally said to succinctly describe what membership of a City Livery Company encompasses. Many in the modern world would also add fellowship, but we should remind ourselves of the three guiding tenets:

City - We support the Lord Mayor and the City of London, both the governance of the modern City and its ancient traditions. The Livery are the electorate of the City for the Lord Mayor, the Sheriffs and other Officers, elected annually at Common Hall in Guildhall; all Liverymen are encouraged to exercise this right.

Charity - Charity has long been mainstay of a Livery Company, and giving something back to the industry and society that has nurtured us is a very important part of being a Freeman or Liveryman of a Livery Company. On joining the Company, each member undertakes to support charity, and all are encouraged to give regularly to our Charitable Trust. A sum of £10 per month is suggested, but each member should determine what level is appropriate for them. However, everyone should give something. I implore those members who do not currently do so, to do so now by downloading and completing the forms from this site, and start fulfilling their obligations.

Church - Worship has traditionally been important to City Livery Companies, and each is associated with a church. We are proud to call St Lawrence Jewry next Guildhall our church. This Guild Church is the official Corporation of London church and we hold two services there annually.
