Anthony (Tony) Ward CEng FIStructE is a Chartered Structural Engineer, and now Emeritus Chairman of AKSWard, an 80 strong firm of Engineers and Surveyors with offices in London, Oxford, Birmingham, Southampton and Hitchin.
His early career was in the Railway Industry where he was an engineering apprentice, engaged in building rolling stock for British Railways.
His ambitions, however, were elsewhere, in the shaping of the built environment, and on completion of his apprenticeship, he studied structural engineering, working with London Consultants, and qualifying as one of the youngest Chartered Engineers in the country.
He developed a passion for architecture, across both historic, and modern buildings, and in 1976 he set up his own practice, working principally in the Middle East Emirates, and later diversifying into the UK.
In recent years he has practiced in London, where he has been responsible for many major buildings, including Central St Martin’s University for the Arts, at Kings Cross, Unison’s new headquarters in Euston Road, The St Pancras Renaissance Hotel, Selfridges, Harrods, and the Bank of China in Lothbury.
Recent overseas commissions include a 750 boat marina in Gibraltar, and historic buildings in Hong Kong and India.
The practice designs buildings in all sectors, with a large portfolio of work in education, commercial, industrial, ports and marinas, hotels, residential, sports and leisure, civil engineering, and building surveying, and heritage.
He became a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Constructors in 2005, taking Livery in 2007, and is now Master.
Tony is an experienced sailor, fly fisherman, and skier, and is a former trustee of Priors Court School for severely handicapped autistic children and young adults.
He is a family man, married to Jan. They have four children between them, and nine grandchildren.
