Press Release : Worshipful Company of Constructors Becomes Net Zero
I am proud to announce that our company, The Worshipful Company of Constructors, has reached our initial target of Net Zero. I would like to thank the tireless efforts of the Climate Committee and the support of our members in reaching this stage and look forward to what we can achieve next for the betterment of our Community, The City of London and the World we live in.
David Sheehan – Master for the Worshipful Company of Constructors
May 2023 – As a modern City of London Livery Company for professionals working in the construction industry, the Company was granted Livery and Royal Charter of Incorporation by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II in 2010.
Our members come from all sectors of the construction trade, including Architects, Surveyors, Engineers, Builders, Lawyers, and Accountants.
Buildings and construction account for nearly 40% of energy-related CO2 emissions whilst also having a significant impact on our natural habitats.
The Worshipful Company of Constructors established a Climate Action Committee back in 2021 with an aim to use our networks and influence to help address the climate and biodiversity emergency in construction and the built environment. Since its inception we have established a task group structure of five working groups: Climate Action & Policy, Supporting the City of London and Livery Climate Action Group, Climate Action Scholarships and Skills, Industry Influence and Engagement and Impact Reporting. Our committee is growing, and we currently have 28 climate committee members.
We produced our “Climate Action Plan” in 2021/22 and issued our final version on 31st October 2022, this has then led to us producing our “Carbon Reduction Plan” which was issued in its final version 02nd March 2023. The plans have calculated our companies’ emissions and has allowed us to reduce our emissions and then consider how we can offset our carbon.
As of the 16th May 2023 we planted 7,000 trees which will remove 28 Tonnes of CO2 per year and now confirms we are Net Zero
Huge congratulations to the Constructors’ Livery who are leading the way in their plans and in the execution of them and the holistic approach they have taken. They are talking and advocating important messages about the impact of climate but are also taking actions for themselves and assisting others to reach net zero.
Alderman Alison Gowman, Founder and Chair of the Livery Climate Action Group
This is only the start, and we will continue to support The Livery Climate Action Group as core group members, we will continue to be involved in the City Biodiversity plans and the City of London Corporation climate initiatives, we will continue to support the scholarships programmes and the work we are doing with the “City of London Skills for a Sustainable Skyline”. Finally, we will continue to reduce our carbon footprint and run events which will make an impact and change like the iRecycle event “Canal Clean-up” which we will be undertaking in 2023.
